Frequently asked questions

Questions about my refund/taxes owed

Where is my refund?

  • Federal: IRS Where's My Refund
  • Illinois: MyTax Illinois
  • Other State refund tools can be found by searching "Where's my refund [State]"

Why do I owe this year?

  • Causes vary by person, but no matter the cause, the reason you owe is due to the total amount withheld was not enough to cover your tax liability.
  • If you cannot afford to pay your tax bill in full, you can apply for a short-term payment plan directly through Online payment agreement application | Internal Revenue Service

Questions about my Return

Can I make an in-person appointment?

  • We are a fully remote tax preparation service.  In-person appointments are not available.  We ask that you direct any questions you would typically have in an appointment to kirstyn@kilpacct.com

How long will it take?

  • We use a queue system.  Returns will only be queued after all documents are received.  If we have to request documents from you, your file goes to the back of the line.
  • If you submit your documents earlier in the tax season, the turnaround time is faster.  If you submit your documents later in the season, the turnaround time is slower due to volume and may require an extension.

I need an extension. What happens now?

  • If you need to file an extension, you can choose to submit additional tax payments to avoid potential fees and penalties.
  • We will do our best to advise you on how much to pay in, but accuracy is only estimated, not guaranteed.  For extensions, basic information is added to get a general idea of what might be owed.  It is not detailed or accurate, only a suggestion.

When will my extension be finished?

  • 1040 Extensions are due October 15 of the year the extension takes place. We typically begin working on extensions in June, and we continue to use a queue system.  The clients who have submitted their documents in their entirety will be finished in the order received.
  • Extensions for Partnerships and Corporations are due September 15 of the year the extension takes place. We typically begin working on extensions in June, and we continue to use a queue system.

I got a letter from the IRS/State. What do I do?

  • Don't panic.  Many times, the IRS/State just needs some information clarified, or they need to update you on a change they made to your return.   If you are unsure how to respond to the letter, please send a clear copy of the letter to kirstyn@kilpacct.com
